Roosevelt High School Key Club
Concert Night Food Drive
9/14/2021
Concert night is an ideal time for food drive because hundreds of families will gather in the same location. The huge population flow means that even if one family only contributes one can, there will be hundreds of canned goods.
This was an idea that I had two years ago and I contacted Mr. Brown, our band director, and he approved our food drive. He sent emails to families to notify them to bring donations. I set up my collection stand near the entrance, alongside cookie and coffee stands. The parents were very generous and contributed hundreds of canned goods that night. I hope to continue this food drive to make it a tradition of Roosevelt. By doing this, Roosevelt community can contribute a significant amount of donations to the local food bank. If you are interested to join this year, email me or meet me at the monthly meeting.

Self Directed Projects
9/13/2021
During Covid, I had plenty of free time and I want to find ways to contribute to the community, so I self taught video filming and editing and became a Youtuber. I am interested in finance so I created a channel called Gen Z Finance to talk about finance related problems faced by young people, including credit card, student loans, and college preparedness. Here is the link to my channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg0c_97Rrx6Tw6cbaAjcbzw
I believe self directed social service should also count toward your volunteer hours because you are contributing goods to the society free of charge. So if there are something that you are passionate about and you believe they can bring goods to the society, do it. As long as you can properly explain what you have accomplished, I believe it will count towards your service learning requirement. Boys and Girls Club
9/13/2021
Although I have never volunteered at Boys and Girls Club, I did on-site research on the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club, which is the closest one to Roosevelt. Here are some of my discoveries:
There were a lot of teenagers there when I visited. They were playing a variety of sports: basketball (there is an indoor basketball court), Xbox, Climbing ropes, and playing soccer outside (there is a medium sized court yard). The facility overall was neat. And it's easy to find parking spots in the neighborhood. If you are someone who is interested in kids and wants to lead as an example (as a big brother/sister). I would recommend to volunteer at that location. The only con is the club is it's quite far from Roosevelt. TA at WBW
9/13/2021
WBW stands for Washington Business Week. It's a week long summer program that teaches students how to become the leaders of the business world. I highly encourage people to participate in this program. It's not for profit, and as a three time participant I guarantee the summer camp will be a memorable experience.
If you have participated in the program before, consider to become a TA. Some of your responsibilities are: facilitating discussion, welcoming speakers, distributing information, and office work such as inputting data and arranging meetings. Being a TA is a totally different experience where you get to know the inner working to organize a successful summer camp. Although it's quite intense, it will prepare you for the corporate world that you are about to enter. Check-out their website at: https://www.wbw.org/ and apply to become a TA! DECA Events
9/13/2021
If you are interested in business and volunteering, DECA is definitely the right choice for you. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities at DECA. For start, you can participate at the annual Provail Auction Event where you will serve as an auctioneer to assist with fundraising for children with disabilities. In addition, volunteers are expected to facilitate many activities such as wine tossing (the one I was assigned).
Being a part of a formal gaza is a rare opportunity for high schoolers. I learned a lot about professional etiquette and event hosting. For more volunteer opportunities, please consult with Mrs. Carter. UW Clean up
9/13/2021
Waking up early on a Saturday morning to pick up trash. That's what volunteers at the UW Clean up do every week during the football season. After Friday night's wild party there is a lot of trash to be picked up, before crows, seagulls, and raccoon feed on the trash. In addition, it is very unseemly to see fields of litter on the beautiful UW campus.
Also, in an agreement with Roosevelt's music department, the UW will support our program by paying thousands of dollars of each clean up. And since volunteers are dealing with trash, UW is kind enough to double the volunteer hours. Plus, it will be a good experience to mention when you are applying to UW! 9/13/2021
I volunteer at University district food bank every Wednesday after school before Covid. I took the bus toward University District; the food bank is a couple stops away.
The shift is two hours long and it could be quite intense. Just imagine working at Safeway with five times the intensity. There are a lot of hungry customers, and volunteers need to timely restock the supply to make sure customers are satisfied. I love to volunteer there because the amount of fulfillment I got when I realized that I had distributed two pallets of food to those who needed them, and the happy smiling faces when I handed them the organic cakes from PCC or the olive bread fresh from the bakery that they were unable to afford otherwise. At the end of each shift, I was exhausted yet I felt accomplished. That's what motivates me to keep coming back. If you don't want the work to be so intense, there are easier options available. You can work in the sorting and packing zone where you will categorize the donations and split them to smaller packages. Remember, food bank is a busy place so be prepared to multi-task. |
