University District Foodbank
9/13/2021
I volunteer at University district food bank every Wednesday after school before Covid. I took the bus toward University District; the food bank is a couple stops away.
The shift is two hours long and it could be quite intense. Just imagine working at Safeway with five times the intensity. There are a lot of hungry customers, and volunteers need to timely restock the supply to make sure customers are satisfied. I love to volunteer there because the amount of fulfillment I got when I realized that I had distributed two pallets of food to those who needed them, and the happy smiling faces when I handed them the organic cakes from PCC or the olive bread fresh from the bakery that they were unable to afford otherwise. At the end of each shift, I was exhausted yet I felt accomplished. That's what motivates me to keep coming back. If you don't want the work to be so intense, there are easier options available. You can work in the sorting and packing zone where you will categorize the donations and split them to smaller packages. Remember, food bank is a busy place so be prepared to multi-task.
